What does a Manhattan apartment listed as having a “city view” actually mean?

Q: When Manhattan apartments are listed as “city view,” does that mean expansive skyline vistas or does it mean more modest exposure, possibly backs of buildings but still with light?

A: This is one of those subjective descriptions of an apartment amenity that is difficult to standardize because it can vary so much between properties. I usually interpret “city view” as being a view of buildings in the surrounding block, i.e. “modest exposure,” unless there is more clarification, such as “open city views” or “expansive city views.” If the view is “expansive,” the listing will often include a photo, since this can be a differentiating feature, like a large terrace or an extensive renovation.  Hope this helps!
